I grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, and as soon as I was old enough, got work in the city's hospitals. It was there that I saw the toll of extreme poverty first hand, and that's what first attracted me to the practice of medicine.Then, as my career progressed, I began to feel that it would be important to have both a deeper understanding of the illness, and a deeper relationship with each patient.
