CMS Scales Back Physician Voluntary Reporting Program
In January 2006, JOP reported that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) had established a new Physician Voluntary Reporting Program (PVRP) through which all physicians would be able to report on the use of quality measures. When the program was originally introduced in the fall of 2005, CMS planned to evaluate 36 quality measures. In response to concerns from the physician community that reporting on 36 measures would be too administratively burdensome, CMS announced at the end of 2005 that the PVRP program would be launched with a "smaller core starter set" of 16 measures. These measures and more details about the PVRP program are available from CMS at www.cms.hhs.gov/PhysicianFocusedQualInits.
